Who we are and what we do

African scholarship is vastly under-represented in the study of law and society. Law and society research from Africa and on Africa is vastly under-represented, with all the consequences for scholarship, policy-making and understanding this entails.

To address these absences, two Law & Society in Africa conferences were held in Cape Town (2016) and Cairo (2019), which in turn gave rise to this network. These were deliberately set up as meetings of African scholars working on the continent, and were different from anything many participants had experienced in the academic space.

The Africa Law & Society Network is a meeting point for African scholars working at the intersection of law and society. We are mainly focused on scholarship from Africa, on Africa. We aim to increase the visibility of African scholarship, build the field on the continent, and bring African scholars into conversations on theory and practice in this area.
